The exhibition

The exhibition "TORINO11 | BIOGRAFIA DI UNA CITTÀ" is organized by Urban Center Metropolitano, with the support of the City of Torino and “Italia 150”, the Organizing Committee for the Celebrations of 150th Anniversary of the Unification of Italy in Torino and Piemonte (1861-2011). The curators are Carlo Olmo and Arnaldo Bagnasco.

The exhibition, one of the main events which will take place in Torino for the XXIII UIA World Congress (with the presence of more than 10.000 architects and students from all over the world), is scheduled from June 29 to October 12, 2008 and is set up in the fantastic naves of the “Officine Grandi Riparazioni delle Strade Ferrate” (Backbone 2 - between Corso Castelfidardo and via Borsellino). The building is now disused and is intended, in the near future, to become an important centre for arts and culture, in a city that is increasingly defining this vocation.

The exhibition represents an important opportunity to reflect on the physical, social and economic changes of Torino from the 80s until today, and to present critical processes of urban transformations involving Turin in the future. Inside the former factory, the exhibition is set in different “rooms”, dedicated to the story of the metamorphosis of some important places – Fiat Mirafiori plant, former Fiat Lingotto factory, the city centre, the central Backbone... – read as detectors of new social structures, as “capacitors” of economic and cultural processes. Visitors are led on a journey by several routes through large interactive maps, projections and simulations but also drawings, sketches, maquettes, models and photos.

During the opening of the exhibition, Urban Center Metropolitano will provide to a full calendar of events dedicated to the city transformations’ tale: films and documentaries, seminars, debates and workshops.
