Parola d'architetto!

A series of readings about architecture
Circolo dei Lettori Via Bogino, 9 - Torino h. 21,15 - 22,15

Every Monday until 14th February.

Reading group about architecture.

by Urban Center Metropolitano and Fondazione Ordine Architetti, district of Torino.
Reader and moderator: Sergio Pace*.

First, the architect designs.
By means of his pen, his pencil or his computer he manages to elaborate ideas that evolve in spaces. Nevertheless, architecture in not just about design, since not everybody is able to decipher its codes. Figurative languages cannot explain all the complexity of what is real. In the same way the architect also needs words. Unlike what is believed, the architect has always used writing to try and describe his own thoughts or his works by means of verbal communication.
The reading group will confront with architectural documents written during about two thousand years, from the ancient times to our time, from Vitruvius to Rem Koolhaas (and beyond), to try and reveal the seldom mysterious captivation of a literature that, with the aim of telling the truth of reality, often ends up building dreamy spaces. Commonly words turn into stones: here we will try to see how stones can turn into words.

The program:
One hour per week group meetings, of no more that 20-25 people per group. A book or a topic is chosen and then it is developed by the group and a moderator. The aim is to highlight that book's or that topic's main features, depicting unusual reading patterns or deepening the traditional ones by means of new perceptions of a language or a story and connecting all the critical suggestions coming from the group itself. Then the book turns itself into a prismatic experience that can be observed from many different perspectives, a source of hints, suggestions and pieces of information that do not lay on paper but intercept our daily life.

The reading groups are free.

Sergio Pace is a Professor of history of architecture at Polytechnic of Torino, coordinator of PhD in history of architecture and urban planning and director of the Central Library of Architecture. Graduate in architecture in Rome, he soon realized to have few skills for projecting and decided to commit himself in studying the architectural works of the others. His researches pursue several different topics; the only leading thread seems to be the passion for history and for narration. He deeply trusts architecture itself which he considers as a fundamental contribution to human realization and happiness, while he is often stunned by architects, mostly due to the way they both talk and write.
